Angelique Kidjo, Aya Nakamura, Becca, Efya, Josey, Simi, Tiwa Savage and Viviane Chidid were the nominated successful DIVAs from the pool of entries for AFRIMA prestigious 23.9 Gold Plated Trophy from West Africa in recognition for their unique musical talents.
Their beauties are irresistibly charming like “heaven must be missing some angels”. Their voices calm nerves like the morning dew with the ice–cold feeling gushing through one’s vein. Their names are like rainbows in our dreams registered on the foot print of time.
In no particular order, what makes each of these nominated DIVAs differently unique? Although, they are all winners, however, one must go home with the 23.9 Gold Plated AFRIMA Trophy.
“Once in a Life Time” is a song title from Kidjo 13th studio album that earned her a spot on the nomination list. Though not her original song, Once in a Life Time was originally written and performed by American rock band, Talking Heads. However, Kidjo brought life extraordinaire in instrumentation and vocal delivery. Kidjo’s video for Once in a Life Time, brilliantly embraced new age technology as it has been nominated in the African Rock category.
Angelique Kidjo was decorated with two awards at the maiden edition of AFRIMA held in 2014. She won Best African Contemporary and Best Female West Africa for the song entitled “Shango Wa”. She is also a three time Grammy Award winner among other laurels.
“Joromi”, released in the second half of 2017 is the song title from Nigeria’s versatile performing entertainer – Simisola Bolatito Ogunleye popularly known as Simi. Joromi, more than a rare song has been nominated in African Pop category. It is in fact the opposite of the popular masculine song for the feminine folks. Simi’s song (Joromi) has the same title with Nigeria’s legendary high–life maestro and professor of music, Sir Victor Uwaifo.
Simi, an introvert and unknown to some if not many is a sound engineer with credit to mixing and mastering Adekunle Gold’s album titled “Gold”. Her collaboration with Falz The Badh Guy whose real name is Falana, a lawyer turn rappertainer is rewarding. At the 2017 edition of AFRIMA, Simi was crown Songwriter of the year for the song titled “Smile for me”. Other awards includes: Best Recording of the Year, Best R&B Single, Album (Simisola, third studio album) of the Year at The Headies 2018, Nigeria Grammy version.
Aside been nominated for the regional category, Simi’s album “Simisola” and song “Complete me” have been nominated in the Album of the year and Songwriter of the year respectively.
“Oumou Sangare”, the title of Aya Nakamura song that earned her a spot in the female category Western Region of AFRIMA 5th edition happens to be the name of another Grammy Award winning Malian Wassoulou diva. Oumou Sangare is a mid–tempo hip rhythm and blues romantic song.
Aya Nakamura is a Malian origin, French R&B singer, signed by Warner Music (France) and has released just one single titled “Djadja” since releasing her debut album – “Journal Intime” in 2017.
“Marriage Force”, is a song from Lebanese-Senegalese singer, Viviane Chidid Ndour. The song visual is a perfect interpretation of its lyrics that strongly discredit early child marriage especially for the girl-child.
Viviane Chidid Ndour is a pop singer with rich diverse music genre (Senegalese mbalax, U.S. rap, R&B and Country) resulting from her racial mixed. Crowned Queen of Mbalax, Viviane released her debut album in 1999 and has since then released eight studio albums. Also, Viviane has been decorated with different awards from Afrotainment Museke Africa Music Awards in 2011 to Nigeria Entertainment Awards in 2012 and Abidjan World Music Festival Poro Awards in 2013.
“Ma Lo” in English translation mean Don’t Go. Featuring Star Boy CEO, WizKid and produced by Spellz, Ma Lo undisputedly registered Mavin Records Diva, Tiwa Savage for the second time in AFRIMA West Africa female category after winning the award in 2017 with the song title “All Over”.
Ma Lo video, directed by Meji Alabi was nominated in the Best African Video, Best African Collaboration and Song of the year category.
Tiwa’s music journey from the release of her debut studio album “Once upon a time” in July 2013 has been characterized with mixed uprising. From the ugly romance to her songwriting deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Management and Publishing deal with Jay Z’s Roc Nation in 2016. She has soar higher like the eagle with six zeros endorsement deals. Tiwa had been decorated with the MTV Africa Music Award, The Headies Awards, Channel O Music Video Award, Nigeria Music Video Award, and City People Entertainment Awards.
In addition, Tiwa is on the list of nominated Artiste of the year.
“Mamee”, a romantic teaser song title from Ghanaian singer, songwriter and actress Efya. Winning a spot in this year’s AFRIMA Western Africa female category, it featured Nigeria’s Afro–Pop singer Mr Eazi. Mamee meaning “Give me” is about flawlessly winning in totality the undivided attention of the opposite sex depending on which side of the fence one is seated.
Efya, born Jane Awindor a re-branded name prior to her solo musical career after her three years record deal with Charterhouse, the organisers of Stars of the Future Talent show (a musical reality television show she was the first runner up) came to a close. Starring in Yvonne Nelson Single and Married romantic movie, Efya have three studio albums and accolades among which is the Ghana Music Awards Best Female Vocalist she won back –to–back for four years.
“Number One” is indeed a number one sexual romantic plea between lovers. It featured Nigeria’s award winning Afro–Pop singer, Mr Eazi and secured Becca, Ghanaian singer, songwriter and actress a spot in AFRIMA’s Best Western Africa female category 5th edition.
Rebecca Akosua Acheampomaa Acheampong aka Becca enlisted as one of Ghanaian’s 100 most influential personalities has once headline Ghanaian feminine concert – Girl Talk. Six years after her debut studio album – “Sugar” in 2007, she released “Time 4 Me” featuring Africa’s outstanding performers among whom is Africa’s and Nigeria’s most decorated living legend, 2Baba. In 2017, Becca released her third studio album entitle “Unveiling” containing songs like; Number One featuring Mr Eazi, Na Wash featuring Patoranking, With You featuring Stone Bwoy, Steady featuring Ice Prince among others.
“Jour J–0”, earn Ivorian singer songwriter a spot for the 23.9 Gold Plated AFRIMA Trophy in the Western Africa female and African Contemporary category respectively.
Gnakrou Josée Priscille Aka Josey, yet to be decorated with any musical accolade, however, her musical inputs are noticeable after coming second place in Castel Live Opera, a musical African contest with the aim of spotting vocal talents. Crown with the title “Ambassador of the right of self” by the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers in Ivory Coast, she is entrusted with the mantle of spotting Africa’s next voice by replacing Cameroonian singer Charlotte Dipanda as coach in The Voice Afrique Francophone television contest.
