The Frankfurter Buchmesse and the International Information Content Industry Association (ICIA) have announced the longlist of the Third Global Illustration Award. The ceremony will be held on 10 October 2018 in the new Frankfurt Pavilion.

Illustrators from 43 countries took part in the competition; more than 8000 images were submitted in five categories: book illustration, original unpublished children’s picture book project, advertising & editorial illustration, scientific illustration, and theme illustration. The topic of this year’s theme illustration category is “Signs & Civilisation”, highlighting central aspects of the Guest of Honour presentation “Georgia – Made by Characters” at the Frankfurter Buchmesse 2018.

The longlist has been published online, and the shortlisted winners of the competition will be announced during the award show. These are the nominees:

Members of the jury narrowed down the submissions from 8000 images to 2000 in a first online round. During an offline jury meeting in Beijing end of August they went through several rounds of discussion to decide on the longlist and the final winner list. 100 works have been longlisted across all categories and one gold award winner and two runner-up excellence award winners have been chosen for each of the five categories. Out of all the longlisted works, one grand award winner has been selected that all judges at site could agree on embodied the spirit of the Global Illustration Award the most. Criteria the judges were looking for were amongst others: creativity, execution and technical skill, innovation and originality with regards to the concept and conveyance of emotion and the inner spirit of the work, and effectiveness in the expression of information, ideas and concepts.

There are six members on the GIA jury, with Claudia Kaiser, Vice President of Frankfurter Buchmesse, acting as Chairperson. The other members hail from around the world and are specialists in the fields of illustration, art, publication and media. They are: Victoria Fomina, renowned illustrator (Russia), Yusof Gajah, artist, writer and illustrator (Malaysia), Reinhard Schulz-Schaeffer, Professor of Informative Illustration, Faculty of Design, Media, Information (DMI), Department Design at the University of Applied Sciences, Hamburg; Sven Ehmann of Infographics Group Berlin and Mingzhou Zhang of the International Board On Books For Young People (IBBY).

The Global Illustration Award ceremony will be held at Frankfurter Buchmesse on 10 October 2018 at 6 pm in the newly opened Frankfurt Pavilion on the Frankfurter Buchmesse Agora. During the course of the award show, an entertaining program will open the evening with well-known personalities of the illustration scene such as the Professor of the Cambridge School of Art, Martin Salisbury, and illustrators Květa Pacovská and Kitty Crowther. The award winners will be revealed for a first time and an after show networking reception will give all participants and the audience the chance to mingle and to connect.
